Pvt Joseph Jones served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 8 May 1862 Mustered out: 4 May 1865 (surrendered) Side: CSA Regiment(s): Co. G, 1st Regiment, Louisiana Artillery
Joseph was born in 1829 in Jefferson County, MS. He was the son of Joseph JonesMartha Augusta Green. On 28 Jan 1852 in Claiborne, Mississippi, he married Jane H Carpenter. They had 7 known children.
On 8 May 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 1st Regiment, Louisiana Artillery[1].
In April 1863, a letter was sent by a physician, requesting Joseph be allowed to return home as she had a "partial separation of the pelvis bone" after giving birth to a child two months prior and had "entirely lost the use of her lower extremities". The letter stated she only had a very young lady providing assistance and that "the negroes have no one to manage or direct them". The request was for him to be allowed to return home for 60 days[2]. Based on the muster rolls, it is assumed he was granted leave as he showed "sick" as early as July 1863[3] and continued to show this way through April 1864[4]. It is believed he returned to service in summer 1864.
He was taken captive on April 9, 1865, at Blakely, Alabama [5]and was transferred to Ship Island, Mississippi on April 15, 1865, and then again to Camp Townsend[6]. On 4 May 1865 he was mustered out via surrender at Citronelle, Alabama[7].
After the war he returned home to Claiborne, Mississippi, where he continued farming. It was here he passed away in 1900 and was buried at the White Oak Cemetery.
