Biography

William ap John had 16 children, including three sons named John Jones: one by his wife Ann Hawley, one by his wife Constance Morgan, and one by a mistress.[1]

Research Notes

Profiles for William's children included ones for Philip and Elizabeth (Ann's children) with birth years of 1531 (for Philip) and 1533 (for Elizabeth). This profile, with 1529 birth year, would fit as first-born son of Ann. And one of the profiles for John had a death date of December 6, 1565, which would fit for him considering his brother named William, son of his half-brother John, as heir.
This source says that William's first son was John (but does not say who the mother was - one source says Ann was 2nd wife,[2] while Bartrum says Constance was 2nd and Ann was 3rd, but dates work better if Constance is 3rd).
One John was the half-brother of Ann's son Philip (the John with son William who was Philip's heir). This John cannot also be Ann's son. It seems he would be Constance's son, as her son John is said to have married Ann, daughter of Giles Doddington. (But on Bartrum's chart, that John appears to be the one referenced as William's first son, and Bartrum has noted him as being son of Constance).
The father of William, heir to Philip, was said to have died before 1609, but to have been alive in 1604. See biographies posted by the History of Parliament Online for Philip and William.[2]
Jonet ferch William Wogan is the only mistress Bartrum names, and Bartrum shows her as mother of Alswn and Richard. The mother(s?) of the third John (and second Elsbeth) is not named.

working theory (better sources needed):
  1. son of Ann is William's first son John (Jones-6022, born 1529, died 1565)
  2. son of Constance is the half-brother John (Jones-48621, born 1545, died after 1604/before 1609) whose son William was heir to Ann's son Philip in 1603
  3. son John by a mistress is the one born 1520 (Jones-23950) - more info needed on him)

Jones-23950, Jones-6022, Jones-48621 are all set as rejected. Now that there are three John Jones attached as sons of William Jones, we can try to figure out who their mothers are. (see notes on Herbert-476)

actually... 3 Johns (another one by a mistress).

Bartrum shows that William had two sons named John, one by Ann Hawley and one by Constance Morgan. His son Philip is said to be half brother of "John Jones of Treowen, was a former sheriff of Monmouthshire".

(see sources on Herbert-476)

Jones-6024 and Jones-6022 appear to represent the same person because: They can't be brothers
