He received his M.D. in 1921 from the University of Cincinnati and became a general surgeon. At the beginning of WWII, he served on the draft board in Petersburg, Virginia. After drafting so many young men although he was past draft age, he felt compelled to enlist and served in the Pacific Theatre, based in New Guinea, setting up field hospitals and performing surgery. He was present at the Battle of Leyte, Japan's last, desperate effort to prevent the allies from invading the Philippines.
