Herbert Jones was born in 1897 in Leigh. He was the second child of Hugh Jones and Mary Ellen (Rigby) Jones.

By March 31st 1901, Hugh and Mary were living at 78 Twist Lane, Leigh. Hugh had his own shop selling household furnishings. They had three children - John Edward (6), Herbert (3) and Lily (1).

By April 2nd 1911, they were living in Common Lane Street, Westleigh. Mary's mother Margaret was living with them. They were still running a furniture shop, and had seven children.

Herbert's father died 7 Aug 1914.

Herbert's mother died on April 5th 1939.
