Name: William Richard Jones. [1]
Born: 9 FEB 1853. Dawley, Shropshire, England. [2] [1] [3]
Census 1861: Mill Lane, Dawley, Shropshire, England. Relation to Head of House: Son. William was 8 at the time and the census image appears to list his occupation as a coal miner. However, the writing for this occupation entry is much fainter than others and it is possible that there was an attempt to erase this. [4]
William (8) was living with his parents Evan Jones (52) and Esther (47) and brothers Thomas (12), Edward (4) and Robert (10) in Dawley, Shropshire.
Dawley is one of the older settlements in Shropshire, being mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086). It is divided into Dawley Magna ("Great Dawley") and Little Dawley. Today, it forms part of the new town of Telford. The Jones family 1861 census refers to Mill Lane, Dawley Magna. Dawley was, for over three centuries, a mining town, both for coal and ironstone and the 1861 census the Jones family were involved in both coal and stone mining.
Census 1871: Langley Terrace. Dawley, Shropshire, England. Relation to Head of House: Son. [5]
In 1871, now aged 18 and a miner, William's household comprised his parents Evan Jones (60) and Esther (45), his brothers Thomas (23), Edward (21) and Robert (19), a visitor John Richards (31), probably a relation of his mother (but not his uncle John), and a lodger James Wall (47).
Marriage: 13 MAR 1876. 46 Bridge St, Hindley, Lancashire, England. [6] [7] [8]
Census 1881: 27 New Road Private House, Hindley, Lancashire, England. Coal Miner. [9]
By 1881 William, now 28, had formed his own household that comprised his spouse Mary (24), daughter Esther (4), son Lambert (8 months) and boarders Henry Barker (23) and Robert Jones (30), his brother. He had moved from Shropshire to Lancashire, his spouse Mary's home location. That move had probably taken place before 1876, the year he married.
Census 1891: 124 Bridgewater St, Hindley, Lancashire, England. Coal miner. [10]
In 1891 William was still a coal miner and his family comprised William (38), Mary, his wife (34), daughter Esther E Jones (14) and son Lambert (10).
Census 1901: 12 Castle Hill Rd, Hindley, Lancashire, England. [11]
In 1901 William's occupation was recorded as a coal miner (hewer). His household comprised William (48), his spouse Mary (44), Esther (24) a cotton weaver, Lambert (20) also a coal miner hewer. Margaret (18) a cotton weaver, James (12) and Mary Ethel (8),
Census 2 APR 1911: 35 Argyle St, Hindley, Lancashire, England. [12]
By 1911 the family have moved to Argyle St, Hindley and comprises William (58) described as an "underground labourer coal miner", Mary (54) married 34 years, Esther 33, cotton weaver and Esther Nuttall (84), William's mother. The couple has had 9 children with only 4 surviving to 1911. So far only seven children have been found in records.
Died: 29 AUG 1930. 85 Argyle St, Hindley, Lancashire, England. Age: 77. [2] [13] [14]
Buried: 2 SEP 1930. Grave B 5-133 C of E. Hindley Cemetery, Lancashire, England. [13] [14] [15]
The paternal and maternal relationships are confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between John Mayes and Harold Kilburn his 3rd cousin. Their most recent common ancestors are Evan Jones and Esther (Richards) Nuttall, their 2nd great grandparents. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 3rd Cousin, based on sharing 42 cM across 5 segments.
The maternal relationship is confident supported by an AncestryDNA test match between John Mayes and his 4th Cousin, BG. Their most-recent common ancestors are John's maternal 3rd Great Grandparents William Richards and Mary (Bowen) Richards. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 5th–8th Cousin, based on sharing 19 cM across 4 segments.

Margaret Alice Jones
Margaret Alice Jones appears in the 1901 census as a daughter, aged 18 but did not appear in the 1891 FamilySearch census transcription. Perusal of the image reveals a transcription error (is on the next page of the census) and indicates that she was aged 8 in 1891 thus born about 1883. An entry in the 1939 Register for Margaret A Clarke, her married name, indicates that she was born on 11 Jan 1883.
But a birth registration for Margaret Alice with a mother's maiden name of Cooper has not been found. However there is a birth registration for Margaret Alice Bromiley (Mar 1883, Wigan) that looks likely.
James W Jones
James W Jones appears in the 1901 census as a son, aged 12 but did not appear in the 1891 FamilySearch census transcription. Perusal of the image reveals a transcription error (is on the next page of the census) and indicates that he was aged 2 in 1891 thus born about 1889.
A baptism record (Birth Date: 12 Jan 1889, Hindley, Baptism Date: 12 Feb 1889) is available with parents William and Mary Jones.
But a birth registration for James William with a mother's maiden name of Cooper has not been found. However there is a birth registration for James William Bromiley (Mar 1889, Wigan) that looks likely.
Mary Ethel Jones
Mary Ethel Jones 1901 census as a daughter aged 8 thus born about 1893. A baptism record (Birth Date: 21 Dec 1893 [should have been 1892] Birth Place: Bridgewater St, Hindley, Baptism Date: 12 Jan 1893).
But a birth registration for Mary Ethel with a mother's maiden name of Cooper has not been found. However, there is a birth registration for Mary Ethel Bromiley (Mar 1893, Wigan) that looks likely.
Note Also
The 1911 census indicates that William had 4 of 9 children born to his spouse still alive. Records have been found that confirm that 3 of the four were alive in 1911. However, no records of 2 of the 9 children have been found.
Records found of birth registrations indicate that the first two children, Esther and Lambert's mother's maiden name was Cooper. The remaining 5 birth records found for Thomas, Samuel, Margaret, James and Mary indicate a birth mother with maiden name Bromiley.
It is possible that the 5 last children were adopted. There may be connections with a Bromiley family through Esther Richards, William's mother.
Alan Tattersall's Research Notes
The five children we have both listed for William and Mary are:
Esther Elizabeth (b 1876 at Hindley, on Lancashire BMD with mother's maiden name COOPER) Lambert (b 1880 at Hindley, on Lancashire BMD with mother's maiden name COOPER) Margaret Alice (b 1883 at Hindley, on Lancashire BMD with mother's maiden name BROMILEY) James William (b 1889 at Hindley, on Lancashire BMD with mother's maiden name BRAMILEY (sic)) Mary Ethel (b 1892 at Hindley, on Lancashire BMD with mother's maiden name BROMILEY)
All five of these children were with William and Mary in the 1901 Census, which is why we have (not unreasonably) assumed they are their children. William is shown as a coal miner, 48 years old and born at Dawley in Shropshire. Mary is 44 years old and born at Ince, Wigan. The five children were all born at Hindley. The two eldest girls are both cotton weavers, Lambert is a coal miner, and the two youngest have no occupations so presumably were still at school.
By 1911: • Only Esther Elizabeth was still living with William and Mary. She was now 33 years old and still single. • Lambert had married Ellen Knight in 1903 and started a family of his own - they were living in Atherton. • Margaret Alice had married James Clarke at Hindley in 1902 (her sister Esther Elizabeth and brother Lambert were both witnesses at her wedding) and had also started her own family. They were living in Ammanford, South Wales, presumably having moved there to find work. Another branch of the family had also moved there at the same time. This was the TWIST family - George TWIST, who is my great grandfather, had married Alice COOPER in 1889. Alice was Mary COOPER's cousin, as her father Edward was the younger brother of Mary's father Lambert. • James William had died at Hindley in 1903. • And Mary Ethel, poor girl, was housed in the Royal Albert Institution for the Care and Education of Idiots and Imbeciles at Lancaster (obviously sympathetic language wasn't a priority at that time). Now the 1911 Census return states that William and Mary had actually had nine children in all, but only four of them were still alive. If we leave aside for the moment the thorny problem of the mothers' maiden names, we can assume that five of the nine children were those who were living with William and Mary in 1901. We already know that one of those five, James William, had died in 1903, so the other four were the children who were still alive, and as described above we have in fact traced them all in 1911. This leaves two issues to be resolved - who were the other four children of William and Mary who had died, and why were Margaret Alice, James William and Mary Ethel all shown on Lancashire BMD with mother's maiden name BROMILEY ?
I decided to spread the net a little bit wider and came up with a bit more information. Cutting a long story short, I found on Lancashire BMD a marriage of a John JONES to a Parnal BROMILEY at Wigan in 1872. It seems that, at least to begin with, this couple was producing children at Hindley at the same time as William and Mary. For them I originally found:
Edith JONES (born 1872 and died 1877) Samuel Bromiley JONES (born 1874 and died 1877) Thomas JONES (born 1877) Samuel Bromiley JONES (born 1878)
As we already know, if you conduct this search on Lancashire BMD using the surnames JONES and BROMILEY it also brings back Margaret Alice and Mary Ethel, who according to the censuses seem to be Mary COOPER's children and not Parnal BROMILEY's. Similarly, if you change the mother's maiden name to BRAMILEY (a simple case of mis-spelling) you bring back James William, who also seems to be Mary's child and not Parnal's.
I found the John and Parnal (thank you, Lord, for such an unusual given name as 'Parnal') family in the 1881 Census living at Dukinfield. Living with them was an alleged daughter Mary Alice, who was then ten years old. I couldn't find a birth record for her, but then John and Parnal hadn't married until 1872 so she was probably born out of wedlock. Also living with them were the Thomas and the second Samuel Bromiley listed above. In 1891 they were still in Dukinfield with the same three children and another Edith who had been born in Dukinfield around 1884.
The problem with all this, of course, is that I can't see how clerical error involving this family could have possibly come into it. Even though they were originally in Hindley, by 1881 they were in Dukinfield, an entirely different registration area, and the three children that have the mysterious mother's maiden name were born in 1883, 1889 and 1892.
I have attached to this e-mail the christening records for all three of the children who appear on Lancashire BMD with the BROMILEY mother's maiden name (for what it is worth the other two children who had COOPER as their mother's maiden name were christened at the same methodist chapel). You may well already have them, but they are all clearly William and Mary, and in the first one they are living at 5 Cooper's Yard (half the COOPER clan lived in Cooper's Yard at some point !). These children MUST have been Mary COOPER's, so it's a real conundrum where the BROMILEY name has come from. The only thing I can think to do is to send off for birth certificates to see what they say, because this must be clerical error of some kind.
Now for a quick look at the problem of the other four children that the 1911 Census tells us had died. There is a gap of four years between the births of Esther Elizabeth and Lambert, and then another gap of six years between the births of Margaret Alice and James William. I would think it likely that any other children the couple had would have been born in these gaps, and they presumably couldn't have lived very long as they don't seem to have appeared on any censuses. We also have the possibility that in the Lancashire BMD and Civil Registration records they might appear with the wrong mother's maiden name. However, since all the other children were born at Hindley we can be reasonably confident that the others we are looking for were born there too. There is also a possibility that, provided they lived long enough, they were christened, since again all the others were.
Unfortunately, however, the christenings at St John's Methodist Chapel in Hindley do not include any other christenings for children of a William and a Mary in those two gaps. Nor are there any others after that of Mary Ethel in 1892, and it is unlikely there would be any before Esther Elizabeth as she was born in the same year that William and Mary married. So we have to go back to Lancashire BMD and keep our fingers crossed that something jumps off the page.
There is a Thomas Jones who was born in 1877 but, as described earlier, I have worked out that he was the child of John JONES and Parnal BROMILEY, and he was with them at Dukinfield in the 1881 Census so he can be discounted. Similarly, there is a Samuel Bromiley JONES born in 1878, but he was from the same family and again is with them in Dukinfield in 1881, so he can be discounted too.
Then there were twins named Elizabeth and Mary JONES with mother's maiden name BROMILOW born in 1884. I think I mentioned in one of my long ago e-mails that I have a BROMILEY family elsewhere in my tree (which has nothing whatsoever to do with the COOPERs), and I know it pays to keep an eye out for slight mis-spellings - remember that James William's mother's maiden name was given as BRAMILEY. These BROMILOW twins could be another occurrence of the BROMILEY surname. There are recorded deaths in 1884 at Hindley of an Elizabeth and a Mary JONES, both aged 0 yrs, but no others before 1911 where the age at death would match a birth year of 1884. Further to that, there are burial records on Lancashire Online Parish Clerks for All Saints Church, Hindley, on 6 Jun 1884. The two children who were buried were Elizabeth JONES aged two and a half days and Mary JONES aged 4 days. In both cases the place of abode is given as Bridgewater Street, Hindley. I would think it almost certain that the two deaths relate to the twins born in the same year. And since their birth records give the mother's maiden name as BROMILOW, which could easily be an error for BROMILEY, and since we are pretty sure that BROMILEY has been entered as a maiden name for children born to Mary COOPER, then it is possible that Mary was the mother of these twins and that they are two of the other four children who died.
According to her christening record Margaret Alice was born on 11 Jan 1883, and these twins must presumably have been born close to the beginning of June 1884. There would, therefore, have been ample time for Mary COOPER to recover from the birth of Margaret Alice and get pregnant again in time to give birth in the middle of 1884. One potential issue is that when Margaret Alice was born the place of abode was 5 Cooper's Yard, while only eighteen months later it was Bridgewater Street. However, I don't see this as a fatal objection since there was a lot of movement of this kind in those days, and in any event Bridgewater Street is only round the corner from where Cooper's Yard used to be.
Having said all that, just to be on the safe side a search for other children of a male JONES and a female BROMILOW in the period from 1871 to 1884 does bring up one other birth at Hindley besides the twins, that of a Mabel Maud in 1875. She died at the age of 1 yr in 1876, and a christening record on Lancashire Online Parish Clerks shows that Mabel was the child of the aforementioned John JONES and Parnal BROMILEY (another spelling error).
To try and get even more on the safe side I searched for any other marriages of a male JONES and a female BROMILOW from 1870 to 1890. Besides the John JONES and Parnal BROMILEY marriage there were also James JONES and Alice BROMELOW, who married at Wigan in 1870. Unfortunately, with such common names and no additional information it would be extremely difficult to find out whether this couple were ever in the Hindley area, so for the time being there is nothing we can do with that information.
After that there are no more birth records at Hindley for a JONES with mother's maiden name COOPER or BROMILEY, or with any likely corruption of BROMILEY. And I can't find any birth records that might match the other two children who died. Part of the problem, of course, is that JONES is such a common surname, and there are simply too many records that might actually fit the bill.
So I'm sorry I can't resolve the issue for you but, as I said, I think that the only thing that might help now is to ask for the birth certificates, or perhaps to write to Wigan Register Office to ask them to check whether the original records do in fact reflect what is on Lancashire BMD and in the Civil Registration Index. If they do then any error must have been made in the nineteenth century, and I don't know what could be done about it now.
