Arthur Walter 'Joe' Jones DSM was born in 24th February 1922 at Guildford, Western Australia, Australia. He was a son of Clarence Jones and Vi Sweetman.[1]
On 17th February 1941 he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy.[2] He initially served aboard the armed merchant cruiser, HMAS Manoora. From 1942 he was a member of the special commando unit, Z Force, which made a successful raid on Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbour in 1943 (Operation Jaywick). He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, published in the London Gazette 11 April 1944 on page 1678 at position 5.[3] He was discharged on 28th May 1946.
He married Joy Vienet in 1947 at Perth, Western Australia.[4]
In 1964, Joe accompanied his Jaywick cobbers, Ted Carse, Horrie Young and Moss Berryman aboard the Krait as she made her triumphant entry into Sydney Harbour to commence her new life as a museum ship. In the early 1980s, together with Horrie Young and Taffy Morris, also a Jaywick cobber, appeared on an episode of televisions' This Is Your Life about the Krait.
He passed away on 30th May 2013 at Ferndale, Western Australia.[5]
