Biography

Leroy was the son of Wilson and Elizabeth (Downen) Jones ^[1] of Black Township, Posey County, Indiana. He was born on the family farm on January 29, 1843 ^[1]. Leroy came from a large family of twelve children, he being the next to youngest child. His parents settled the rich farmland north of the present town of Mount Vernon in southwestern Indiana, arriving there around 1807. His grandfather, the Reverend Samuel Jones, was the first minister to preach in the county. Leroy married Catherine Knowles August 31, 1865 in Posey County. It is interesting that his brother Levitus married Anna Knowles who was Catherine's older sister. Catherine was born in Indiana in June of 1846. Leroy was a Civil War soldier. He was a member of Company C, 25th Indiana Infantry Volunteers. Leroy was a photographer by occupation and by 1880 he owned his own shop in Mount Vernon. He, his wife, and their two children were living in the town of Mount Vernon where he had his photography shop. Their son Floyd was listed as 14 of age and their daughter Della, who was born in October of 1876 was listed as three years old. Their third child, Anna B. Jones, was born in 1874 and died in 1880. By 1900 Della and her son Floyd (age one) were living with her parents at this time. Della had married a man named Willingham and had divorced him. In 1920 the U S Census listed Leroy as being 76 years of age and his wife Catherine (spelled with a K) was listed as 73 years of age. Her father was born in Georgia and her mother was born in Indiana. Leroy passed away in June 11,1921 at the age of seventy-eight ^[1] and is buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery near Mount Vernon, Indiana. Catherine died in 1934 and is also buried at Bellefontaine.
