I was born in 1971 in Maitland District Hospital at Maitland, New South Wales, Australia, the second child and only son of Alan Mervyn JONES and Carolyn CHAPMAN.
When I was 16 years old, I attended three family funerals over a five month period, and realised that the same people had attended all three funerals. Not knowing who they were or how they were related, I began to ask questions. A photo of a soldier on my grandmother's wall also took my interest. Armed with a list of my great-grandparents written by my dad (see below), I visited the local cemeteries in search of my ancestors. Thus began an obsession that has so far spanned 35 years!
A list of my Great-Grandparents handwritten by my father Alan Jones in 1987

Congratulations on getting the most connections onto the Wizard of Oz team - I tried to catch up with you but you obviously have more stamina than me! But I see you are of a younger generation!! Interesting that we are also 'connected' - think through one of my daughter in laws!
I have been doing genealogy for 65 years since I married and gained the surname Jellyman - had to research that. Been going ever since. Joined Wikitree in 2017 and started entering the family one by one then. Only recently (via the YouTube videos) discovered the extensions which I think cut the time for putting on entries to a quarter of the time. Now into putting on Grandchildren's spouses - it never stops.
Best wishes, Marian (Stokes-3595)
I started off wanting to add my own family members in to increase my CC7, however I fell down a few rabbit holes - kept finding profiles that had lots of children and grandchildren that needed to be added on. Then all the spouses and in-laws....
Thank you for your commitment to the England Project and its goals in 2024! Together, we have made a significant difference to the quality of the One Big Tree, as we strive towards making English profiles the best that they can be.
It's time for our annual Australia Project membership checkin. Thank you so much for your involvement in the Project in the last year and for all your help improving Australian profiles on WikiTree. Australia Project members play such a vital role in Australian genealogy on WikiTree.
Please could you reply to this profile comment (don't add a new comment!), or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and to let us know what you plan to work on for the next year, and if you would like to change any of the teams you are on. Our teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.
We know that people move on to new things, so if you no longer want to be in the Australia Project, please let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.
Many Australia Project members are active on Discord. It's a great way to communicate with other members of your project team/s, or to ask any general questions. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, let us know, and we can send you an invite link to the dedicated Australia Project server (WikiAustralia) where all our chat channels are located. We also communicate through the Australia Project google group, and on the G2G.
We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
The Australia Project Leadership Team ~ Gillian, Kylie, Margaret and Veronica
I'm more than happy to stay with the Australia Project, and also the teams I am on.
As well as working on my own branches and twigs, I'll continue to focus on improving and adding profiles connected to my own little part of the world, ie. Maitland, New South Wales and surrounds.
I've also started my own personal project: a freespace page where I am creating a list of soldiers who enlisted for WWI at the drill hall situated at the showground in Maitland, New South Wales, which I am obtaining from the recruitment notices published in The Maitland Mercury newspaper in 1915 and 1916. My goal is to use this page as a collective source, by linking existing/new profiles to the page. As almost all of these soldiers were assigned to the 34th and 35th Battalions, I would also like to eventually get them all connected to the Category pages for these two battalions.
I sent you a message a while ago as part of the England Project's annual check-in with project members. I haven't heard back from you. I hope you are well.
If you could send me a quick message to confirm whether you are still interested in the project and wish to remain an active member, that would be great. We ask all project members to reply to our annual check-in as a requirement of membership.
Thank you again for your contributions towards the England Project's goals!
W Robertson, on behalf of the England Project leadership
I'm happy to continue working with the Sussex county team. There are a handful of other counties I'm interested in, but I will contact the County Team Leader/s when I decide which ones to work in next.
Thank you for contributing towards the goals of the England Project! Over the past year, a staggering amount has been done to improve English profiles on WikiTree and we couldn't have done it without you and our other project members.
The England Project leadership like to check in with all our project members at least once a year.
Are you happy to stay in your current project team/s? Or is there another team you would like to join or become more active in?
Please reply to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message. I look forward to hearing from you. Please also let us know if you have other feedback about the direction of the project.
Many thanks!

Yes, I'm happy to continue with the Australia Project. Could I be added to the Sourcerers and Connectors Teams this year please? I'll be concentrating on New South Wales for both.
Thanks Brad for responding to the check-in message, and for your ongoing contributions to WikiTree and the Australia Project, they are much appreciated!
I've added you to both the Sourcerers and Connectors teams. All the best for the coming year.
You’re a member of Southern Cross Stars for the 2023 WikiTree Source-a-Thon. Thanks for choosing us! Your Bib is 159 if you want to your Bib and create a sticker. We kick off this evening. The times for starting and finishing for various locations in Australia is at Southern Cross Stars Chat.
There is Source-a-Thon ‘how to’ information and some lists of unsourced profiles to work on at Southern Cross Stars, but you can work on any unsourced profiles that you want. You’ll find resources relevant to Australia under Australia Project Resources. We'd love to see you on the team Discord channel. If you haven't yet joined Discord, see Help:Discord.
I’m always happy to receive a direct message if you have any other questions, or need help with anything. Have a great fun weekend :-)
Gillian, your Team Captain!
I was going to post to invite you to join up to the Southern Cross Stars for the Source-a-Thon, but you beat me to it :-) Thanks so much for registering. Also Congratulations for doing the first level of the England Project Orphan Trail. That's such a valuable thing to do.
Thank you for joining our project. We are pleased that you decided to join us and hope that you find the Orphan Trail rewarding.
The England Project Leaders like to touch base with each of our members periodically to make sure everything is going well. This is our formal annual check-in and we are interested in your perspective as a Trailer, whether you are still waiting to be buddied up with a Trailblazer, on the road to completing the Orphan Trail, or taking a short break.
We would be interested to hear whether you're finding the explanations and guidance in the Orphan Trail pages useful. No more than a couple of sentences would be enough. We are always looking to improve and feedback plays an important part.
I look forward to hearing from you. Please respond by posting a reply below or sending me a private message.
On behalf of all the Leaders, thank you again. We look forward to your completion of the Orphan Trail and your continued involvement in our collaborative and fun Project!
I have completed the two profiles from the 1838-1957 period of OT1, and I am currently working on my first profile from the1700-1837 period. I have been buddied up with Gillian Loake, who has been very helpful and has provided some great feedback.
I have been reading through the Orphan Trail pages as well as a few example profiles, and have found them very useful.
Hi Brad, we must be related . Dinah (Gill) Andrews and Thomas Andrews are my 2x Great Grandparents. I have a booklet written by Brian Andrews in 1984 to celebrate the Andrews Family Reunion which was held at Mulbring in 1984...it has a lot more information on the family...I see missing children and if you would like to contact me i can fill in a few blanks for you...
Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
Hi Brad, thanks for creating those recent categories, just a couple of things, category pages must have some applicable content or they end up on error lists. Cemetery and location categories have particular content, called a Category Info box (CIB). Have a look at at Category: Raymond Terrace General Cemetery, Raymond Terrace, New South Wales and Category: Salt Ash, New South Wales in edit mode and you'll see the template that produces the end result.
Hi Brad, welcome to the Australia Project. We are delighted that you have joined us and look forward to working with you. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or post to the Australia Project google group,
Thank you for joining us! I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going. How do you like WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How To Pages been helpful or have they left you with questions?
