Biography

River Jordan was born about 1796 in North Carolina, perhaps in Coneto Creek, Pitt County, North Carolina (location in NC poorly sourced). He was the son of Benjamin Jordan (abt.1760-abt.1810) and Elizabeth Jordan of Bladen County, N.C. According to http://www.ncgenweb.us/bladen/reports/pait/lennon.john.pdf, Benjamin and family came from Pitt County, N.C.

In the 1820 census River was in Bladen County, North Carolina.^[1] The household included:

• River, age 16 thru 25
• Female, age 26 thru 44
• Female, under 10

River is reported to have married Lucy Ann Chauncey (1802-1891) on 12 Feb 1828 in Columbus County, NC. This is unsourced. They probably had five to eight children.

In the 1830 census Rever {River} was in Bladen County, North Carolina.^[2] The household included:

• River Jordan, age 30-40
• Female, age 30-40
• three slaves

In the 1840 census River was in Bladen County, North Carolina.^[3] The household included:

• River Jordan, age 40-50
• Female, age 30-40
• Female, age 50-60
• Children - 2 girls and 3 boys
• three slaves

In the 1850 census River (age 54) was in Bladen County, North Carolina, United States. Elizabeth Jordan was probably his older sister.^[4]

The 1850 census slave schedule shows that River was in Cape Fear South West Side, Bladen, North Carolina and owned five slaves.^[5]

In the 1860 census River (age 68) was in Bladen, North Carolina, United States.^[6]

River is believed to have died about 1862 in Bladen County, North Carolina.
