Name Jacobus "Covey" Jordon. Name also found as Covith / Clovis / Covus / Cove. [1] [2] [3]
Birth:
About 1784, probably Campbell County or Bedford County, Virginia. [4] [5] [6] [7]
Parents
"In my opinion, comparatively little information has been found surrounding Covith Jordan. There is a lot of debate going on online about his parentage (many people say William Jordan and Lucy Stith, but in my opinion, there is nothing to point to these two people as Covith's parents except the fact that they lived in Bedford County at the correct time to have been Covith's parents -- hardly compelling evidence)." -- Source?
First Marriage
"Jacobus Jordan" married "Patsy Carter" 15 Mar 1803, in Bedford County, Virginia.[3] Note: Patsy is a nickname for Martha.
Notes for Martha "Patsey":[8]
"David Carter, who served as surety to her marriage may have been her younger brother (b. abt 1790)....
"Many sources give Patsey's birth date as "1772", but on the 1850 Russell County Census she is 68 years old, placing her birth date in 1782...."
"Covith, Patsy and children lived in Russell Co., VA for many years. By the time of the 1840 census, Covith and Patsy were living separately in Russell Co."
"In 1850 Covith was living in the household of David Carter in Lawrence Co., KY. David Carter could be Patsy's brother or her brother-in-law, if she was widowed before her marriage to Covith."
"After David Carter's death, Covith married David's widow and they had two children. A notation of their marriage can be found on-line at the Lawrence Co., KY USGenWeb site."
"In the 1850[9] census for Russell County, VA, some census taker recorded that Martha ("Patsy") (Carter) Jordan was born in Rockingham County, VA, but I believe that was an error and should have been Buckingham (the Francis Carter family of the 1782 tax list for Rockingham moved to Georgia about 1797 and his will did not mention any daughter Martha or Patsy)." Patsey Jordan 68 Rockingham Co., VA (can't read or write). Derryfield 9 Russell Co., VA.
Children with Martha "Patsy" (Carter) Jordan:
Second Marriage:
Malinda /Richards Carter. Malinda was born about 1818, maybe in Russell County, VA. They were married 18 OCT 1854, Lawrence, Kentucky. [10] [11]
Notes for Malinda/Matilda:
"Malinda was the former wife of David Carter, referred to in Patsey Carter's records. She was 36 when she married the 70 year old Covey in 1854."
"There are some interesting discrepancies in Malinda's age as reported by the Lawrence County KY census information.
"In 1850 Malinda is David's wife, and 40 years of age:
1850[4] Lawrence Co., KY census:
"In 1860 Malinda is now "Rachel", wife of Covey, and 60 years of age:"
1860[5] Lawrence Co., Ky Census, #357:
"Ten years later, in 1870 Malinda is 51 years of age:"

Family stories has [sic] always been told about Jordans being Cherokee and now I'm trying to prove it. [Web Post by Barbara Jordan Straw, Bartlesville, OK].

"In my opinion, comparatively little information has been found surrounding Covith Jordan. "I also feel that there are also some children attributed to him who wouldn't hold up under closer inspection. I'd like to see more docmentation and less speculation. Take any information on children other than Benjamin or Frances with caution (althought I think the Derryfield connection is pretty solid too - it looks like Carters, Jordans, and Derryfields traditionally married in Bedford County). No Jacobus (or several of the other "children" listed for Wm. and Lucy Stith Jordan) is mentioned in William's 1817 will.
"I have not had time to verify the information I've gathered online, but I've included it so that I can follow up on it. If you can add any facts, proof or documentation, additional children (or definitively remove children) to the Covith line, please contact me." -LH.
About the name Covith. "I have to agree about the interpretation of Duane Boggs [Carter Family Genealogy Forum] regarding the name Covith: "Patsy Carter's husband was Jacobus Jordan, which led to the nickname Covey (spelled in various records as Covy, Covus, Covith (a lisp, perhaps), etc.)."
