Biography

Charlotte was born about 1793, in Virginia. It is unclear if her name is Rachel or Charlotte/Charlotta Jordan. We do know that she was called "Charity". Maybe Rachel and Charlotte were sisters. Some have speculated that Rachel was married about 1813/14 to Matthew Shipman. Their first child, Minerva, was born about 1814, in Virginia. If Rachel is a separate person, it is speculated that she died about 1825 in Tennessee and Matthew married Charlotte Jordan. Charlotte and Rachel may have been sisters, but we know Charlotte's maiden name is Jordan. We don't know the maiden name of Rachel. The exact number of children that Charlotte/Rachel had may be twelve. Charlotte/Charlotta "Charity" Jordan Shipman passed away before 1880. She was living with her son, Ervin, and his family on the 1870 U.S. Census for Hickory, Carroll County, Arkansas, at the age of 80. She has not been found since the 1870 census.
