Biography

Corporal Ebenezer Jordan Sr. served with 6th Lincoln County Regiment, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Ebenezer came to Union River in 1770, had a lot adjoining his borther, Solomon. A small brook divided their lots. He set off to Ellsworth 03 Mar 1809.

From "History of Ellsworth, Maine" by Albert H. Davis, 1927, p. 23:

Solomon Jorday and his brother, Ebenezer, settled on Whittaker Brook. They came here from Falmouth, now Portland.

The first two children of Nathaniel Jordan and Dorothy Hill are recorded as Ebenezer, born 22 Aug 1728, died 22 Oct 1736, and Sarah, born 1731, died 27 Oct 1736. These two children sadly died within 5 days of each other. In the "Encyclopedia of Plague and Pestilence" 2003, by George C Kohn on pg. 272, describes an epidemic of "Throat Distemper". The initial description was from Kingston, New Hampshire in 1735, where 26 children were reported to have died in Aug, 1735. From 1735 through 1736, the disease swept up and down the New England Coast. The doctors of the time had difficulty distinguishing the "Throat Distemper" from Scarlet Fever or Diphtheria as both diseases were rampant during the period. Kohn suggests the fatalities in Boston were Scarlet Fever, and the cases further north were Diphtheria. Although there are similarities between the two illnesses, Diphtheria is the disease known historically as having been the cause of wiping out an entire household in a matter of days. The importance of the death of Ebenezer,1728-1736, is that it identifies Ebenezer Jordan, 1742-1826, as grandson who was left a bequest in Deacon Ebenezer Hill's will, the son of Dorothy Hill Jordan and Nathaniel Jordan. It also proves Ebenezer Jordan 1742-1826 was the son of Dorothy Hill and not the son of Mary Sawyer Randel or Mary Cutliever.
