- Martin Been wrote:
- According to correspondence I received from Chaim Joselson this is what happened to the Jews in the area.
- "In May 1915 we were deprted by the Tzar to Penza, deep Russia. There we lived almost together house to house until 1921 when we were repatriated to to Janishkel"
- I then wrote and asked him some questions and he replied; "You are right, I was 3 weeks old when we were deported.... There my father was mobilised and sent to the Austrian Front. In 1918 he returned already as a red army soldier to Lithuania. In Jonishkel he found already Moshe Yehuda Been with his family and also the Wasserman family. He got back our house and most of the furniture and property. The reaction of most of the local population was positive and even friendly. In 1921 when we all returned to Jonishkel we found everything in good order and ready to accept us".[19][20][21][22][23]
