Daughter of George Edward Joseph JP of Pavo Park Somerset, Cape Colony

Harriott Elouise (Joseph) Orpen was born on 25 Jun 1836 in Somerset East, Cape Colony, South Africa, daughter of George Edward Joseph (1803 - 1866) and Eliza (Peacock) Joseph (~1813 - 1878). Harriot was baptised on 29 January 1837 in St George's, Graham's Town, Cape Colony.[1]

Harriott Elouise married Henry Martyn Herbert Orpen (1831 - 1908) on the 8 September 1857 in Port Elizabeth, Cape Colony.[2]

Harriott Elouise died on 29 Mar 1877 in Cape Town, Cape Colony aged 40.Harriott died on 29 March 1877 and their estate passed probate in 1876-1878 in Cape Town, Cape Province, South Africa.[3]

Has two memorials. Both can be viewed in Find A Grave. One also lists her date of marriage and place.

Harriott was mentioned on a memorial in Maitland Cemetery, Maitland, City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality, Western Cape, South Africa with a death date of 29 March 1877.[2]

  • Date of birth from gravestone + calculation on probate date (40y 9m) give 25 June 1836 BUT the baptism record has an alternate date of 27 July 1836 i.e. July 27.36
