Mahalia Joseph was born in 1859 in Kentucky, daughter of Charles Joseph (1833 - 1911) and Sarah (Mann) Joseph (1835 - 1889).
In the 1860 census Mahala (age 1) was in District 1, Breathitt, Kentucky.[1]
In the 1870 census Mahala (age 10) was in Breathitt, Kentucky. Her family lived near the brother of her husband Lewis Watkins (1840-1918)[2]
