Biography

Neither Phebe's birth date or death date are known. Her husband died intestate in 1816.

The only record for Phebe so far is her marriage to Cornelius Shaw in the Pittsgrove Baptist Church.

"April 23, 1787, Cornelius Shaw to Phebe Joslin" at the Pittsgrove Baptist Church.[1][2]

Children

  1. Josiah Shaw
  2. Smith Shaw

Possible Origins

  • One theory from an Ancestry tree [3] is that her name was actually Phebe Cornwell and she is the widow of John, son of Jacob Joslin. She would have had three children when she married Cornelius, so could not have been born in 1767.[4] But John didn't die until after he made his will in 1795, so Phebe couldn't have married Cornelius Shaw back in 1787 -- she would still have been married to John.
  • Another guess has her as the daughter of William Josselyn/Joslin and Phebe Sheppard.
  • She supposedly lived from 1767-1822. [citation needed] Will use these dates until any shred of anything emerges.
