Biography

Nettie Louise Joy was born in River Bend Township, North Carolina on 31 August 1920 to Thomas Alexander Joy and Daisy Florence Fisher.^[1] She married Frank Crocker Nichols on 17 April 1948 in Gastonia, North Carolina.^[2] They had 2 daughters. Nettie died on 17 November 2014 in Stanley, North Carolina. She is buried at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly, North Carolina.^[3]

Nettie Louise Joy Nichols, 94, passed away Nov. 17, 2014, at Stanley Total Living Center.

She was born in Gaston County on Aug. 31, 1920, daughter of the late Thomas Alexander Joy and Daisy Fisher Joy.

Nettie was a long time member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Belmont where she taught Sunday school for many years and was very active in the United Methodist Women. She also taught Kindergarten for 20 years at Springfield Elementary School in Stanley. Nettie played the piano, sang a pretty alto and was known for memorizing poetry, especially Robert Burns and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. She also loved to travel and take bus tours with her sister Inez. It made Nettie really happy to sit down with a new Whitman's Sampler and her Good Housekeeping. Nettie had strong political opinions that she mostly kept to her southern self. She also was an avid basketball fan and cheered for the players while watching them on TV.

Nettie is survived by her two daughters, Louise Price of Stanley and Susan Nichols of Texas, who will cherish her memory. Survivors also include her grandchildren Joshua Price and wife Annette of Mt. Holly, Gabriel Price and wife Jill of Stanley and Melissa Ralston, MD of Texas as well as her great grandchildren Nicholas Isaiah Price, Ethan Joshua Price, Elijah Matthew Price and Abigail Grace Price.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Frank "Pete" Nichols as well as her six older sisters.

A celebration of the life of Nettie Nichols will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at CommonGround, 5481 Hickory Grove Road, Stanley.

Visitation will be prior to the service, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Gardens in Mt. Holly at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stanley Community Choirs, 111 General Pemberton Street, Stanley, NC 28164.^[4]
