Bill,
I'm so glad to hear from someone who is actually related to Solomon and
Jerusha. I have been trying to find the parents of my great grandfather,
William Wallace Joy. The genealogy work my father did before his death
indicated that Solomon Joy was the father but I can't find anything to
substantiate that. Does that obituary you were talking about mention
siblings? I suspect that Solomon may have had more than one wife or that
there is another generation in between that I'm missing. Is there a
Christopher anywhere? Dad had that name with a question mark next to it.
Does that match with anything your wife has in her records? Anyway, I have
done some research on Solomon and Jerusha and here is what I have found. I
have copies of some of my resources and would be happy to send them if need
be.
1st Generation
Solomon W. Joy - son of Solomon Joy and Eliza Sweetser
Born: 7 Nov 1828 Delaware County, Ohio
Married: 10 Oct 1849 Delaware, Ohio to Jerusha Prouty
Died: 26 Mar 1868 Richland, Mahaska, Iowa
Sources: 1. Census record of Iowa, Mahaska County, Richmond Township and
Peoria, 20 Jul 1860.
2. Death information from cemetery listings in Peoria Cemetery, Mahaska
County, Iowa. Indicates he was a member of the 33rd Iowa Infantry Co. C. (I
have sent for his Civil War Records but haven't received them yet.)
3. 1850 Census, Troy Township, Delaware County, Ohio, pg. 283. Lists Solomon
Joy Jr, wife Jerusha from New York. Also living in the same household were
Solomon Joy age 62 and Eliza age 49, both from Vermont, Eliza A. age 17 and
Sarah A. age 0. (See note below under Eliza Sweetser.)
Jerusha Prouty
Born: 6 Jan 1828 New York to Abel Prouty and Polly Dudley
Died: 6 Jan 1966 Richland, Mahaska, Iowa
Sources: 1. "History of Delaware County and Ohio", O.L. Baskin & Co.,
Historical Publishers, 1800, pgs. 777 - 778.
2. Cemetery listings in Peoria Cemetery, Mahaska County, Iowa (found on
GenForum under Solomon Joy and families - IA, OH, VT dated 30 Apr 1999)
3. 1850 Census, Troy Township, Delaware County, Ohio, pg. 283. (Also a page
or 2 before this, Abel Prouty's family is listed. Jerusha is listed there
also as age 24. Since Solomon and Jerusha were married in Oct, I think
Jerusha was listed in both households. The mother listed (Jerusha's
stepmother), Cintha age 51, and the younger children listed are the same as
mentioned in "The History of Delaware County and Ohio", pg. 777 - 778.
Jerusha's older brother, Steven M., is also listed as age 25. Steven was a
lawyer and became senator later on. I found stuff on him on the internet.
2nd Generation:
Solomon Joy - son of Obadiah Jr. Joy (Ensign) and Content Hovey
Born: 17 Aug 1799 Putney, Windham, Vermont
Married: Don't have date or place - Eliza Sweetser
Died: 28 Feb 1872 - Peoria, Mahaska, Iowa
Sources: 1. Death information from Cemetery listings in Peoria Cemetery,
Mahaska County, Iowa.
2. 1850 Census, Troy Township, Delware County, Ohio, pg. 283. Listed under
Solomon Jr. as living with him. Age is unreadable but looks like 62. Was a
farmer from Vermont.
3. "History of Delaware County and Ohio", O.J. Baskin, Historical
Publishers, 1800, pgs. 318 - 319 - gives an account of the Sweetser family
coming to Delaware Township from Dummerston, Vermont. Specifically mentions
the family was accompanied by Solomon and Wilder Joy.
4. "Seth Sweetser And His Descendants", Philip Starr Sweetser, Integrity
Press, pg. 266, lists information about William Sweetser and his family.
Talks about them moving to Delaware Ohio. Eliza is listed as the oldest
child. It says she married a Joy and settled in Iowa. It then goes on to
give William Sweetser's genealogy back to 1588.
5. "Thomas Joy and His Descendants In The Lines of His Sons Samuel of
Boston, Joseph of Hingham, Ephriam of Berwick: A Porfolio of Family Paper",
compiled by James Richard Joy, New York, 1900, pg. 83 lists Solomon as the
son of Obadiah and Content Hovey. It indicates that Solomon removed with
Wilder Joy to Ohio in 1815. This book takes the Joy line back from Obadiah to
Thomas Joy and Joan Gallup to 1599. We follow the line of the son, Joseph.
Eliza Sweetser - daughter of William Sweetser and Delight Pierce
Born: 15 Jan 1801 - Dummerston, Vermont
Died: 10 Sept 1965 Peoria, Mahaska, Ohio
They had two children, Solomon W. Joy and Eliza Angelina Joy. Eliza
Angelina was born 12 Dec 1833 in Ohio and died May 1909 in Halsey, Linn,
Oregon. She married Marion Dekalb Smith 17 Dec 1851 in Delaware County,
Ohio. I am thinking that since she was only 17 in the 1850 census and was
living with Solomon and Jerusa, that Sara A. is her child. There was a Smith
family listed right after the Joy's but I didn't pay much attention at the
time. Now I wonder if it wasn't Marion's family but I don't know that for
sure. Just a hunch.
3rd Generation:
Obadiah Jr. Ensign Joy - son of Obadiah Joy and Elizabeth Doyle
Born: 1767 Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts
Married: 21 Sept 1788 Putney, Vermont
Died: 21 Sept 1788 Putney, Vermont
Sources: 1. "Vital Records of Putney, Vermont to the Year 1900", by Ken
Stevens, Genealogical Society of Vermont, 1992, pgs. 190, 308. Gives his
marriage, deaths of both Obadiah and Content.
2. "The History of Putney Vermont 1753 - 1953", pg. 171 - Obadiah served in
the War of 1812 - 1814 as an Ensign.
Content Hovey - daughter of Daniel Hovey and Content Ramsdell
Born: 10 Mar 1772 Oxford, Worcester, Massachusetts
Died: 15 Jan 1841 Putney Vermont
Their children, dates and spouses are listed in "Thomas Joy and His
Descendants."
Sources: Birth date and parents of Content found in "The Descendants of
Joseph Ramsdell". Found on the internet under Ramsdell families. Death date
also found in Putney, Vermont Town Records, PTR2:156.
4th Generation:
Obadiah Joy - son of David Joy and Ruth Ford
Born: 18 Jan 1726 Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts
Married: 26 Mar 1749 Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts - Elizabeth Doyle
Died: 1816 - Portland, Chautauqua, New York
Sources: Information from "Thomas Joy and His Descendants".
Elizabeth Doyle - daughter of Bartholomew Doyle and Elizabeth Sprague
Born: 1728 Rehoboth, Massachusetts
Died: 6 Sept 1730 - Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts
A good history of the descendants of Obadiah and Elizabeth Doyle Joy was
sent to me by Colleen J. Nielson, 54 East 200 South, PO Box 516, Ephriam,
Utah 84627. She has good footnotes and has done extensive research on this
line. I got a lot of information from her.
Also, on the Joy family GenForum page under Mayflower Lineage through
Obadiah Joy dated 3 March 1999, it indicates that we are eligible for
membership in the Descendants of the Mayflower through Elizabeth Doyle Joy.
A follow-up message on 23 Mar 1999 gives Elizabeth Doyle's genealogy path.
Her mother was a Sprague which falls under Richard Warren who was on the
Mayflower.
Once I got this far back, there was tons of information on these families on
the internet. They are all prominent families in Massachusetts. "The
Descendants of Thomas Joy" has a lot of footnotes and research on the
families. I also have a copy of "The Joy Family" by Caroline Dyer. It has
more errors as her research isn't as well done.
Anyway, I hope this helps. I hope you can put this all together. It is
almost 11:00 pm here and I still haven't got all my kids to bed yet. We just
got home from looking at Christmas lights and my five year old is asleep on
the couch. Needless to say, I'm hoping this all makes sense since I had a
lot of distractions while writing. If you have any questions, feel free to
ask. I'm just beginning to do genealogy. I've only been working on my
father's line seriously for about a year. I basically tried to document what
he had written down. The only problem I've run into is documenting William
Wallace's parentage.
You mentioned that your wife is related to the Joy's in Nebraska. Perhaps
she has information that would help me. My father was Charles William Joy.
He was born 9 Jan 1900 in Thornburg , Smith County, Kansas to Alfred Roscoe
and Mira Ellen Davis Joy. They moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska where my father
grew up. He graduated from Red Cloud High in 1917. Alfred's parents were
William Wallace Joy and Sarah Isabelle Koontz. They lived in Smith Center,
Smith County, Kansas and are buried there. I know dad had an Aunt Carrie
Baumann (Frances Ivy Caroline Joy) whose husband, Michael Baumann was a
minister in the area.
Mira Ellen Davis was the daughter of Charles Davis and Ruth Mallonee Davis.
They lived in Mt. Hope, Smith Center, Kansas and are buried in the Mt. Hope
Cemetery. Mira married a Gus Nyberg after Alfred died. They lived in Red
Cloud, Nebraska. I'm having trouble taking that line back any further too.
If you have any information on this line of the family, I would appreciate
the help. I've got Charles Davis' Civil War records but they don't mention
parents or siblings.
Your cousin somehow, somewhere

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Solomon by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Solomon:
