Thomas was born in North Carolina in 1826. He was the son of John Joyce and Elizabeth Dalton. In 1850 Thomas married America Rebecca Martin and together they were parents of nine children. On 27 Feb 1863 Thomas enlisted as a Private in Co. H, North Carolina 53rd Infantry. He mustered out 9 Apr 1865 at the Appomattox Court House. They farmed in Rockingham county, North Carolina where Thomas passed away in 1895 at age 69.
