Biography

Levi Babbidge Joyce was born on 17 October 1845 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine. He was the son of James Joyce and Jane Stinson. Levi Babbidge Joyce and Matilda C. Staples obtained a marriage license on 24 January 1863 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. They were married on 25 January 1863 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, by Rev.C. A. Plumme.In 1870 Levi's parents were living with Levi. In 1910 sons Austin and Sidney were still living at home. Levi was a Selectman & Town Clerk for many years. Levi passed away in 1922 and was buried in Rose Hill cemetery, Atlantic.

Of their 8 children only 4 had children. One of these Laura Ann had two children, neither of which had children. So line carried only through three children.

Levi Babbidge Joyce and Matilda C. Staples had the following children:

i. Adelia Maria "Delia" Joyce Trask

ii. Herman R. Joyce was born on 4 February 1867 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. Moved from Swan's Island to Gloucester, Massachusetts in about 1881. Skippered fishing schooners out of Gloucester for several years. He died in 1950 at the age of 83 in East Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA. From 1895 to 1934 he was a Police Officer in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. Herman was buried in Beechbrook cemetery. One son Gerald Stanley Joyce of Gloucester.

iii. Annie Laura Joyce m. Edgar Smith of Swans. They moved to Portland. They had two children, neither of whom had children.

v. Austin R. Joyce was born on 29 March 1873 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine. He attended the island schools, the Maine Wesleylan Seminary at Kent's Hill and graduated from State Normal School at Farmington in the class of 1904.In 1900 he was a School Teacher at Minturn.He taught in Atlantic and Eastport before going to Norwood, Rhode Island, in 1908 where he was teacher and principal of the Norwood Elementary School until his retirement in 1941. He died on 4 September 1960 at the age of 87 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine.Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swan's Island. No children

vi. Frank Maynard Joyce was born on 21 October 1876 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine. Frank Maynard Joyce and Iola Sarilla Lipsett were married on 30 June, 1903, in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. Married by Rev. Frank L. Wilkens. Iola Sarilla Lipsett, daughter of Christopher Lipsett and Sarah Campbell, was born in Guysboro County, Nova Scotia, Canada. No living children.

viii. Sidney Lester Joyce married twice no children.
