All the Freshwater and Carbonear Joyces are descended from Robert Joyce, whom records show jointly occupied a plantation with John Harvey in 1804 - including 2 houses - purchased from Richard Taylor for 40 Pounds.
It is not known when Robert Joyce and John Harvey came to Freshwater nor where they came from but it is presumed to be the west country and probably Dorset. Possibly Harvey and Joyce came out from the same place in England and they likely died at the same time - possibly at sea about 1806 - 1808; Robert would have died before November 1810 when his widow Mary Sparkes married William Penney of Christchurch.[1]
