Nancy Joyner was born on or near Rainbow Farm, just downstream of modern day Hamilton, North Carolina to Thomas Joyner and Mary Whitney.[1][2][3][4][5] She must have been born before 1790 when her father died.
In 1803, she married Lewelling Bowers.[1] By 1810, they are living in Martin County with three small children and holding six people enslaved.[6] Twenty years later, they are household of seven with thirteen people enslaved.[7]
Her husband, Llewellyn, died around 1838, and in 1840. Nancy is living in that year alone and has three people enslaved.[8]
