Biography

The monument to Sir Andrew Judde at St Helen Bishopsgate, City of London, refers to a daughter by his third wife Mary [Matthew].[1] The daughter is not named but she was Martha Judde.

Through her father, Martha had an elder half sister Alice who married Thomas (Customer) Smythe and half brothers John Judde and Richard Judde. Martha also had half siblings through her mother, Mary Mathew.

In the late 1550s or early 1560s, after the death of her father Sir Andrew Judde (in 1558) and his eldest son and heir John Judde (in 1559), a case was brought against Martha's mother, Mary, who had subsequently married James Altham of Mark Hall, Latton, Essex, but who continued to be referred to as Lady Judde or Dame Mary Judde.[2] Lady Judde and James Altham had taken possession of the manor of Barnes, Surrey, which had previously been a possession of Sir Andrew Judde. Thomas Smyth and his wife Alice (Judde) Smyth who had become administrators of the goods, chattels etc of the late Sir Andrew Judde brought the case to reclaim the property on the basis of the custom of the City of London, the claimants being Thomas Smyth, Alice (Judde) Smyth and "Richard Judde and Martha Judde children of the said Sir Andrew Judde".

"Mistress Martha my ladies daughter" was noted in the will of James Wattar of Latton, Essex, Yeoman, the will made on 01 Sep 1571 and proved on 17 Oct 1572. The Testator was referring to Martha Judde and her mother Mary (Mathew) Altham otherwise known as Dame Mary Judde.[3]

In the will of Dame Alice (Judde) Smythe (the daughter of Sir Andrew Judde by his first wife Mary Murfyn) the will made on 10 Jul 1592, with a Codicil of 22 May 1593, and proved 11 May 1598[4], the Testatrix made a bequest to her sister Martha Goldinge and her two children.

In the will of her mother made on 20 Feb 1596/1597 and proved on 19 Feb 1601/1602[5], Dame Mary Judde made bequests to a number of her children and grandchildren. One bequest was to her daughter Martha Goldinge, wife of Robert, to whom she bequeathed "one neaste of gilte gobletts with a cover which were Sir Andrewe Judds".

Marriage and Children

Martha Judde married Robert Goldinge on 05 Jun 1571 at Latton, Essex.[6]

Martha and Robert Goldinge had a daughter Mary Goldinge who married Bartholomew Gosnold on 19 Jun 1595 at Latton, Essex.[6]

In 1602 Bartholomew Gosnold crossed the Atlantic in the Concord and discovered Martha's Vineyard, apparently named after either Gosnold's daughter Martha or perhaps after Martha (Judde) Goldinge.[7][8]

Death and Monument

Martha Golding was buried on 07 Dec 1614 at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.[7][8][9]

A monument to Martha Golding may have existed in the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds.[10]

Will of Martha Golding 1614

A transcript of the will of Martha Golding was published by Gookin.[7] In her will made on 30 Nov 1614 and proved on 26 Mar 1615 she was recorded as Martha Goldynge of Bury St Edmunds in the County of Suffolk, widow.

She made bequests to her daughter Mary Gosnolde, widow (who was appointed sole Executrix), and her grandchildren Robert Gosnold, Bartholomew Gosnolde, Paule Gosnolde, Mary Gosnold, Susan Gosnold and Martha Gosnold.

Research Notes

It was suggested[11][12] that the daughter of Sir Andrew Judde and his third wife Mary Mathew was Elizabeth who married Sir William Morgan of Pencoed. However, this was an error as the Elizabeth concerned was the daughter of Mary, the 3rd wife of Andrew Judde, but by her prior marriage to Thomas Langton.
