First child to his parents born in Henbury, Connaught Road, Bournemouth, in sub-district of Christchurch, Southampton, England. At about 4-5 years of age emigrated to Canada with parents. Father who had been long time soldier then joined Canadian Army abt 1915 prior to WWI and was mobilized to England, possibly because of speaking the language. Said he watched the bombing by Germany from a hill as a child. Mother died in 1918 from influenza/pneumonia. 1919 father remarried and the family moved back to Canada -- youngest brother Douglas staying with an aunt with intention of joining family later. He and family active fishermen. Had to quit school after 8th grade and went to Alaska in summers to work Salmon industry (see photo). Moved to Portland, OR from Victoria, British Columbia Sept 29, 1923 and was naturalized as US Citizen March 26, 1931. Good friends were Perry Hunt of Cornucopia near Baker,OR and Earl Burnett of Boise, ID. Moved to Idaho with Earl and met Hazel at M & M cafe where he was a dishwasher and she was a "hasher" or waitress. Hazel said the owner took them under his wing and showed them the "sights" of Boise which included the speakeasy lounges of the era. Married in Boise, ID in parsonage next to Methodist Church. Jeff Hanrahan (Hazel's stepdad) and Earl Burnet were witnesses. Moved to Yuma, AZ and then to Calexico, CA on border with Mexicali, Mexico. Worked here as night clerk and auditor at the DeAnza Hotel. Tired of being hot moved to ID to help in-laws (Frances and Claire Lewis who had TB) on their small farm. After Mr. Lewis died there was little employment available so family moved to Portland, OR. Worked in Kaiser shipyards as a lineman pulling cable and other physical labor involved in bldg ships for WWII. Then worked 27 years with Portland General Electric Co. beginning about 1947 at age 38. Active with the Portland Audubon Society. Ardent fly fisherman and outdoorsman. Loved to work in his yard which was populated with unique local flora and fauna. Brought a rubber boa (Charina bottae) to yard on Buffalo St. Did not own and discouraged children from having guns; perhaps because his father was substantially deaf from shooting and one of Hazel's uncles was killed as a teenager when accidently shot in the stomach. Appendicitis in Calexico, CA. Had open heart surgery (aortic valve prosthesis) 14 Sep 1971.
