Francis was born in 1834.

Service from The Story of a Thousand

Enlisted into Company D of the 105th O.V.I. on 1862-Aug-6 at age 28 as corporal. He was wounded twice at the Battle of Perryville on 1862-Oct-8. He was transferred on 1863-Jul-27 to the Veteran's Reserve Corps. [1]

Listed as 1st Lieutenant of the U. S. Colored Artillery, 8th Division. The unit was organized at Paducah, Kentucky between April 26 and October 16, 1863. Judd resigned from this unit May 13, 1865. [2]
