Francis was born in 1893. He was the son of Arthur Judd and Eliza Curtis. He passed away in 1945. He is buried at the Maungaturoto Congregational cemetery. Frank contracted retinoblastoma which is cancer of the eyes as a toddler and from the age of two was totally blind. He spent twelve years in Auckland in his youth at the New Zealand Blind Institute. He learned to read brail and the trade of piano tuning and repairing. In those days nearly every household had a piano so there was plenty of work for him when he returned to Maungaturoto. His younger brother Willie had a motor bike with a side car in which he would take Frank about the district to ply his trade. They also had a farm together which they later sold to their brother Victor. When Frank married his mother gave him 15 acres of land at the top of the Bickerstaffe Road. This land which had been part of the Judd farm had actually been left to Eliza by her father. Frank had a house built on the property and farmed there as well as continuing with his piano tuning. I do remember that he kept pigs on the farm.
