Henry Judde, Gentleman of London
Henry Judde was a beneficiary of the will of his father Thomas Judde of Wykeford [Wickford], Essex, gentleman, the will made on 10 Mar 1533/1534 and proved on 12 May 1535.[1] Henry was willed a farm at South Hanningfield, Essex, and lands at Tonbridge, Kent.
Henry was noted in the will of his uncle John Judde, the will made in 1527 and proved in 1537.[2]
1538-1544: Henry, nephew and heir of John Judde, a defendant concerning the manor of Hoobury, Kent.[3]
1541: He was probably the "Herrye Jude in landes Fees and Offices (£50) [ass. 40s. in Essex]" who was assessed for the City of London Subsidy as a resident of Lime Street Ward. His uncle Andrew Judde was also recorded resident in Lime Street Ward.[4]
Henry Judde married Mabell Rauff by Licence dated 16 Sep 1544, probably in London.[5]
His will (see below) appears to suggest he had no children living at the time the will was made. However, the Stemmata Chicheleana[6] recorded in Table I.4 that Henry had a son, also called Henry, while in Table II.285 that he had two sons, Henry and Andrew. There is evidence of a son named Henry[7] but no other evidence as yet of a son named Andrew.
In his will of 04 Jan 1554/1555 and proved 18 Jan 1554/1555[8][9] Henry was noted as a gentleman of London and his wish was to be interred in the parish church of St Martin.
He made reference to a number of people including:
His lands in Barden, Tonbridge, Kent, Houselands near Tonbridge and the Manor of Hoobery (Howbery) he bequeathed to his wife Mabel for the term of her life. In the absence of an heir, and after the death of his wife, the Manor of Howbery was to pass to his brother William, unless William should trouble his wife regarding these lands, then it would pass to his 'cousin' John Judde.
