Biography

Stephen Judge is born in Benenden, Kent, England in 1812 [1]. His parents are James Judge (1764-1823) and Sarah Tooth (1771-1848).

On November 20, 1845, Stephen marries Ann Goble Lansdell (1812-1875) in Benenden [2]. Stephen and Ann can be found in the 1851 census records living in Tenterden [3]. Tenterden is 8.5 kilometres by road east of Benenden. Stephen’s occupation is shown as “miller master & farmer.” There are no children, but Stephen’s sister, Mary, is living with them. And they have one servant.

The 1861 census provides more detail [4]. In this record, Stephen is shown as a farmer on 630 acres (254 hectares), employing 20 men and four boys. There still are no children but there are three young people in the house: one nephew and two nieces. One of the nieces, Ellen Mason Lansdell, is five years old and she will still be with the family by the time of the 1871 and 1881 censuses. It appears that Ann and Stephen become what almost amounts to the foster parents of this young girl. The 1861 family now has two servants in the house.

In 1865 Stephen is elected as the mayor of Tenterden [5].

In the 1871 records, Stephen is 58-years old and still farming [6]. There are two nieces living with Stephena and Ann, one being Ellen Lansdell. There are also two visitors and two servants living with them.

Ann dies in 1875 and is buried in the churchyard back in Benenden.

In the 1881 census records, the 68-year old Stephen is a widower [7]. He is still farming, although now the census record shows he is only farming 500 acres (202 ha) -- versus the 630 acres in 1861 – and he is only employing 12 labourers and one boy. The 25-year old Ellen Mason Lansdell is still living with him. And he has two servants.

Stephen dies in 1884 and is buried with Ann on February 7th [8]. (Ellen Mason Lansdell goes back to live with her widowed mother in London and then, at the age of about 46, gets married in 1902.)
