Note: John and his five siblings, all born in New York, are not the children of Deacon John Judson (1769-1848) and his wife Nancy Olcott (1771-1847). Many family researchers have mistakenly added these siblings to the family of the Deacon; however, all of the Deacon's children were born in Connecticut.

Biography

John was born in 1817 in Chautauqua County, New York. John was the son of Undetermined Judson. No records for the names of his parents have been found, but DNA analysis indicates that John and his siblings are children of a son of Timothy Judson and Sarah Hooker.

John may have been living in the household of his sister Anna Judson Blood in 1830 and 1840. Anna married Ward Blood about 1825, likely in New York, and it appears that they had no children. In the 1830 census, Ward Blood was living in Chautauqua, New York with the following household: Males 50-59 - 1, Males 30-39 - 1, Males 20-29 - 1, Males 10-14 - , Females 20-29 - 1. The female would be Anna Judson Blood and the male 30-39 would be her husband Ward Blood (head of household).[1] The youngest male in the household could be her youngest brother John Judson.

In the 1840 census, Anna and Ward Blood were living in Hamburg, Erie County, New York. Their household included: Males 60-69 - 1, Males 40-49 -1 (Ward Blood), Males 20-29 - 1 (likely John Judson), Females 30-39 - 1 (Anna), and Females 15-19 -1.[2]

John married twice. His first wife was Ruth Mills and they married about 1846 in Erie County, New York. Ruth's younger sister Fanny Mills would later marry John's brother Daniel Judson. John and Ruth had three children before her death in1852:

Lafayette Judson
Franklin Judson
Susan Elizabeth Judson

In 1850, John, Ruth and their young son Lafayette Judson were living in Hamburg, Erie County, New York, in the household of Harriette Brown (age 50) along with Clarrissa B Austin (age 19).[3] It is possible that these women were related to John through his sister Martha Judson who married an man named Austin.

In 1855, John is living with his sister Anna and her husband Ward Blood in Hamburg, New York. Their household includes L (Lucina?) Dibble and M Berry (age 10), both listed as servants, plus her brother John Judson and his two surviving children from his first marriage: Franklin Judson and Susan Elizabeth Judson.[4] [5] In this census record, john lists his place of birth as Genesee County, New York.

John married second Lucina Dibble Dodge. According to Lucina's obituary, she was married to Elijah Dodge about 1856. They had one child, Peter Adelbert Dodge and Elijah died about 1858. The widowed Lucina Dibble Dodge married John Judson in 1858. A photocopy of her obituary is included on her Find a Grave memorial.[6] John's obituary (see below) states that "In 1858 he was married to Mrs. Lucinda [Lucina] Dodge...". [Note: She may have been divorced, a stigma in those times, from Elijah Dodge as he did not die until 1865.]

In 1860, John and his second wife Lucina Dibble were living in Sangamon County, Illinois. His occupation is listed as farmer with 400 acres of real estate. Their household includes Lucina's son Peter Albert Dodge (listed as P A Judson), their first child Martha Ann Judson (M A Judson), and John's brother-in-law Ward Blood. Also, living with them are C H Strong and I Strong.[7]

John and Lucina had five children together:

Martha Ann "Mattie" Judson
Alma Lucina Judson
Jennie Ruth Judson
Edward Judson
Charles Guy Judson

For the 1865 Illinois State Census and the 1870 US Census, John and Lucina were living in Loami, Sangamon County, Illinois.[8] [9] In 1865, their household included John and Lucina plus on male age 10-15, Peter Dodge, and three females under the age of 10, Martha and Alma, and perhaps a daughter that died before 1870.

In 1870, John and Lucina's household included John's son Franklin, and their daughters Martha, Alma, and Jennie. John is reported as a farmer with $3000 worth of real estate. His sister Anna and her husband Ward Blood were living in an adjacent household. Their household includes Anna, Ward, John and Anna's sister Martha Judson Austin, and Susan Blood (Susan Elizabeth Judson, John's daughter from his first marriage) and Adelbert D Blood (Peter Albert Dodge, son of Lucina Dibble and Elijah Dodge).

In 1880, John and Lucina are living in Auburn, Sangamon, Illinois and his occupation is listed as laborer. Their household includes their daughters Martha, Alma, and Jennie, and their son Charles Guy Judson.[10]. Their son Edward died in infancy (1870-1871).[11]

By 1900, all of John and Lucina's children had left home and the two of them remained living in their own home in Auburn.[12]

John passed away in 1909 and was buried in Sulphur Springs Cemetery, Loami, Sangamon County, Illinois, USA.[13]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
