Worthington was born in 1849, at "Woodlands," the family home near Dunnville, Canada West (present-day Ontario), to Mark Richard Jukes of Ohio, USA, and Harriet Maria Hole, of Devon, England. He was educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton and Trinity College, Cambridge where he attained his MA in 1878. He was a Missionary in Amritsar, Punjab in 1872-1874 and a priest in Calcutta in 1874. He married Emily Susannah Cressley in Belfast, Ireland in 1881 and they had at least four sons and five daughters.
He married Catherine Scott Finch at Godstone, Surrey, in 1908 when he was Vicar of Shobrooke, Devon. Two of his sons were killed in WW1 (memorial in Shobrooke Church). He died at Execliff, Exmoor, Devon and was buried at Shobrooke in 1937.
