Biography

Katy (Jurado García) Jurado is Notable.

Katy Jurado was a Mexican film, stage, and television actress.

María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García was the daughter of Luis Jurado Ochoa and Vicenta Estela García de la Garza.[1] She was born in Guadalajara, Mexico January 16, 1924.[2] Her family had wealth, having owned a large portion of what is now Texas.[2] Her cousin, Emilio Portes Gil, was a president of Mexico.[2]

Katy was married twice. First she married Mexican actor Víctor Velázquez.[2] They had two children, Víctor Hugo Velázquez and Sandra Velázquez.[2] Katy next married Ernest Borgnine in 1959.[2] They divorced in 1964. She had other affairs and close relationships, including one with Marlon Brando.[2]

Katy's godfather, Pedro Armendáriz, was an actor, but her own family was not happy with her decision to become one.[2] She started acting at age 16, in secret, in order to avoid being send to boarding school.[2] Bullfighting first brought Katy to Hollywood.[2] She enjoyed watching it.[2] She was spotted by John Wayne while he was working on his bullfighting film, "Bullfighter and the Lady."[2]

Katy acted alongside many of the best known faces of her Hollywood era, including Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Charlton Heston, Anthony Quinn, and Kirk Douglas.[2] Despite what many fans saw on the screen, Katy had trouble with English.[2] She memorized the sounds she heard instead of the actual words.[2] Despite her troubles, she won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress, and the keys to New York City.[2] Katy enjoyed dignified roles that showcased her Mexican heritage.[2] She never stopped acting in Mexican cinema, even during her time in Hollywood.[2] She won the Silver Ariel three times from the Mexican Academy of Film.[2]

Following an accident involving her son, Katy fell into a depression and stopped acting for several years.[2]

Katy Jurado died of kidney failure and pulmonary disease in 2002.[3][4][2] She was buried at Panteón de la Páz, Cuernavaca, Morelos, México.[5]

Katy is memorialized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.[2] She also is remembered in song, "Que re’chula es Katy (What a beauty is Katy)", composed by Juan Gabriel in 1998.[2]
