Muriel was born on 6 January 1914 in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. She was the daughter of Albert Henry Jury and Annie Beatrice (Sole) Jury. She married Royston Clarkin in 1956.

Muriel died at the age of 88 on 12 April 2002 in Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand.
