John Jury, son of Justinian John Jury and his wife Elizabeth Ann Hoskin was born on 1st April 1826 at Hythe in Kent, England.[1] Four weeks later … ie, on 30th April 1826 … he was christened at Warehorne in Kent, England
As an adult John became one of the early settlers of the new township of New Plymouth in Taranaki, New Zealand. He married Sophia Julian on 18th February 1851 at Omata near New Plymouth in Taranaki. [2] The couple would eventually become the parents of 20 children. The family lived at Omata where John was a farmereeede.
John died at Omata near New Plymouth on 1st January 1902 at the age of 75. [3][4]

Awarded the NZ War Medal for service with Commissariat Dept.
John took part in the Battle of Waireka (which was fought on his farm) and was awarded the NZ War Medal. He received several monetary grants after the war for this and in 1882 he is listed as owning 351 acres of land.
