Biography

Verena was the daughter of Nicholas Justen and Gertrude Freund. Her father became a noted funeral home director and was a furniture store operator (located on Green Street in McHenry}. He was so successful in his funeral business that he owned the first automobile hearse in McHenry County. After his furniture store burned to the ground, he concentrated on the funeral business, a business that is still in the Justen family today, and now includes locations beyond McHenry.

Verena Justen never married. She later left McHenry, moving to Chicago and later to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she made a name for herself in the insurance business. She lived in Dormont, Allegheny, Pennsylvania in 1935. Verena moved back to Chicago in the early 1950's working in the same profession. She held a major position in the "Soroptomist International Club," ^[1][2]a "global women's organization whose members volunteer to improve the lives of women and girls by providing programs leading to social and economic empowerment." The organization has its roots in the Soroptimist movement, started in the USA in 1921 by Stuart Morrow.

Verena died in Chicago on 18 January 1977. Verena is at rest in the Justen family plot in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in McHenry.
