William justus the son of james justus, was born 17 april 1824 in schuyler county illinois. He married rachel mary jane brunner. william and rachel moved to a farm in fannin county, texas, after june 1850. their first child marta ann elizabeth was born in july 1851 in fannin county. ten years later through their hard work and improvements, their farm in fannin county was valued at $1,000 ($26,628.80 inflation) in the 1860 census.[1]
During the civil war William enlisted on 6 july 1861 at bonham texas as a private in the stanley light horse indian mounted volunteers, 14th brigade, texas militia. in 1865, according to a deed record, the justus family was living near bonham. in september he sold 26 acres of land for $600 to Peter b. McKay. during the following year, several families residing in their neighborhood migrated to cedar county, missouri. sin williams two oldest daughters martha and susan, were married in 1869 in cedar county it appears they migrated as to missouri as well, however they returned to texas by july 1870. in july when the collin county census was taken william was a farm laborer living near farmersville. near by susan (justus) walker and family lived with her family. william justus died before 14 october 1877; burial probably in collin county. after his death rachel married solomon west.
