Johann Köhler was born about 1804 in Alsace-Lorraine, which changed hands several times back-and-forth between France and Prussia. At the time of his birth it was a German-speaking part of France.
Johann Köhler married Catherine Akers before about 1830, details unknown. Were they married in Europe or in the United States? Johann Köhler migrated to the U.S. before 1850 and thereafter his name was written John Koeler, Kohler or Keeler.
The 1850 census at Cleveland, Ohio showed John Keeler was age 46, with wife Catherine, 40; and children John, 21; Charles, 13; Helen, 11; Margaret, 9; and Mary, 7. The census showed they all were born in Germany, which suggests that migration might have been as late as 1843. But other records show that daughter Mary was born at Cleveland in 1850 - so there is come confusion.
There is a death record for a John Keeler, 55, on 11 April 1882 at Cleveland, Ohio. But this record says he was born in Ireland! Maybe the clerk in charge of death records didn't know the location of Alsace, and thought it was in Ireland? Or was this a different person?
