John James Kiely was the first child born to Michael Kiely and Chatherne O'Brian there were nine children in the family. John James married in 1898 in Ballarat, Victoria, at the age of 32 to Jessie Watson she was 25 years old. John was a miner like many australians of the time. The family lived and worked in Zeehan in Tasmania about 1899. Then family went to live in a small township Happy Valley just outside Linton about 2O miles west of Ballarat, where John managed one of two hotels in the township here is nothing much left of the township of Happy Valleyl only the school house and one lamp post. Jesse Swinton kiely nee Watson Johns Wife died in childbirth in 1904 the baby died at six months old he was looked after by Jessie's mother Elizabeth Watson. John stayed with his son Gordon Kiely in Happy valley or Linton and ran the Hotel for 2 years till about1906, Kathleen (Kite ) his doughtier went to live with Aunty Margret (Meg) . Gordon learnt to housekeeper and how to care for the horses, learnt to ride and 6 or 7 years old. About this time Johns son Gordon was taken ill with Glandular Fever (seriously) taken by train to Ballarat by his Aunt Margaret to Dr. Champion, operated on the next day in Grandma's Elisabeth Watson's home. It is thought that around 1907 John James went off to find work and left Gordon to live with his grandmother Elizabeth Watson it was at this point the family lost contact with John James Kiely, Gordon was only 8 years old and Kite was aged 6 years old. It was about 1916 that John James Kiely got in touch with his son Gordon who was about to leave Australia to fight in World War One. His son was so angary with him for abandening them. It was said that Gordon had punch his father and worked off. As we can understand because after his father disappeared with in two years his brother had died at six months old then his grandfather John Watson and eventually his grandmother Elizabeth Watson were all dead. Gordon signed the death certificate of his grandmother, he was now an orphan. It was only two years later on 13/10/1918 that John James died in Footscray living with three of his cousens George, Albert, Lsaae? at 53 Couper street, Footscray.John James Kiely Died aged 55 Miner Footscray Cemetery 511 Geelong Road Brooklyn Vic 3012, Roman Catholic page 168. Gordon arrived back to Australia on the 1/1/1919.
