Biography

William was born about 1844 in Pennsylvania.

He was the son of Elisa Unknown and John Kane, and the brother of Civil War veteran Robert Kane of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment of the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color.
