His father was Toralde Gunnarson (ca.1305 - 1380), hi bought the Attale Mill in Hagnes - Fossen (is the Hagnes waterfall) in Kodal, Vestfold county (Norway) from Bjørn Torleivson, probably from Lindem in Nes ved Gvarv (in Telemark). Toralde was probably married to a daughter of Nikolas Hallvardson who is mentioned at Hagnes in 1339, this introduced the name Nikolas (Nils) into Toraldes family. ( DN Xl-55 - 10 of Aug.1366)
He was named Gunnar Kane and titled as a squire in a document from København dated 29 Aug 1398.[2]
