Carl Otto was born in 1860 in Älghult (Elghult), Småland. He is the son of the blacksmith Carl Carlsson from Nottebäck and Regina Henriksdotter from Algutsboda.

In 1861 the family moved to Möcklarhult in the same parish where they were housed in the Nyadal farm. In 1863, the family moved to the Rosdala in Alstermo, Älghult. The family is now impoverished. On January 7, 1874 Carl's father died and the family farm became a "backstuga". In 1877, his brother Jonas Konrad died and Carl's mother Regina is now a "fattighjon" (receivnig charity from the village).

Carl later moved to Eskilstuna in Södermanland and married Anna Matilda Persdotter where they lived, without children, in 1890.
