“In 1937 Appollus W. Kay [sic] purchased Greenbank farm (south of Berea, Virginia along the Rappahannock River), and his son Thomas W. ran the property, rejuvenating the depleted soils by planting and plowing under several soybean corps and repairing fences, buildings, and roads. The subsequent owner, Salvind O. Olson, a Washington real estate broker,leased the land to tenant farmers.” The site was of great strategic importance during The Battle of Fredericksburg in The United States Civil War.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Miriam Adams Kay; three sons, Major Charles Kay, of the United States Air Force; Captain Paul Kay, of the Army, and Thomas W. Kay, of Richmond; five daughters, Mrs. Winifred Campi, of Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Suzanne Talmage, of Wisconsin; Mrs. Marianne Dickenson, of Fredericksburg, and Mrs. Charlotte Featherston and Mrs. Miriam Oleinik, both of Washington; his mother, Mrs. Blanche H. Parker, of Baltimore; three brothers, Llewellyn Kay, of Scotch Plains, N.J.; Richard Kay, of Berea, and Samuel Kay, of Billings, Mont.; two sisters, Mrs. Clary Carter and Mrs. Fred Collison, both of Baltimore, and 17 grandchildren."
