Mustered out: 29 Aug 1865

Regiment(s): Company A, 55th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry (Colored)

Madison was born about 1842, probably in Wayne County, Missouri.[1][2] He may have used the alias Edwin J. Allman.[2] He was a resident of Wayne County, Missouri when he traveled to Readville, Massachusetts to enlist in the Union Army in 1863.[1][2] He enlisted into Company A, 55th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry (Colored) as a private.[3][1][2] At the time of his enlistment, he was described as 5' 8" tall, dark eyes, black hair, and black complexion.[2][4] Madison served on a detachment for picket duty on Long Island (located between James and Folly Islands).[4] He has a plaque dedicated to him at the African American Civil War Memorial (number E-156).[3]

After the war he settled in Louisiana. On the 1880 US Federal Census, he is listed as born in Louisiana, but that could just be an error of the census taker since everyone, and their parents, were listed as having been born in Louisiana.[5] He likely passed away before 1900 when his wife appeared on the census as a widow.[6]

He was married to Ann Cannon and they had one son, L. F.[5] Neither he, nor his wife, could read and write.[5] He filed for a Civil War pension on 6 January 1886.[7] His widow applied for his pension after his death. The application was dated 13 August 1907. [7] His date of death was 14 October 1906.[8]
