First stood for election to Parliament in 1679 but withdrew and was later unsuccessful at Pontefract in 1681. [3]
Eventually returned in 1685 a moderately active Member of James II’s Parliament, [3]
Of his 13 committees, the most important in the first session were to bring in a bill to regulate the militia and to prepare reasons for a conference on disarming Papists. [3]
A letter of his in1690 to the mayor of Leeds shows that he was a strong opponent of the disabling clause in the bill to restore corporations. [3]
Family
He suceeded his father to the Baronetcy of Woodesham, 25 July 1662, and was aged 25 at the Visitation of Yorkshire, 1665 [4][5]
1663 or before, John Kaye married Ann, daughter of William Lister, of Thornton in Craven and Catherine, daughter and heir of Sir Richard Hawksworth, of Hawksworth. [4]
