Biography

Reginald Henry was born on 3rd May 1908 in Carlton, Victoria, Australia. He was the son of Vereina Frances (Keane) Hampton (1889-1919) He died at 11 months old on 10th April 1909.

His father was named as John Bond whom Vereina (Vera) had an intimate relationship with while she was working as a servant. John was a labourer and refuted in court he was the father. Vera stated she had not been intimate with anyone else and he was ordered to pay maintenance.

  • Mother's Claim The Herald (Melbourne) 3 June 1908. MOTHER'S CLAIM - ORDER AGAINST YOUNG MARRIED MAN. At the South Melbourne Court this morning. John Bond, a labourer, was sued for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Mr Nolan appeared for tho mother, Vera Keane and Mr Brennan for defendant. Vera Keane said that she was a domestic servant, residing at Alfred Place. She knew defendant, with whom she became intimate last year, the result being that the child was born at the Women's Hospital on 3rd May last. Defendant had paid her £3 pre-maternity expenses. He was a labourer. To Mr Brennan: She had not been intimate with anyone else, nor told anyone that she had been. Bessie Pedley said that complainant was her daughter, and when she found the condition the girl was in she interviewed defendant who said he would not get married, but would pay all expenses and maintain the child. Defendant, on oath, denied the paternity of the child, but admitted paying £4. He had been recently married. The Bench made an order for the payment of 7s 6d per week, defendant to enter into a surety of £10, and fined one surety of £IO, for the due fulfilment of the order, in default three months' Imprisonment.
