Biography

Margaret Keating was born sometime between August 1-5, 1849. She was baptized on August 5, 1849 in Clondalkin, County Dublin, Ireland. She was the daughter of William Keating and Mary Cody; and her baptism was sponsored by Francis and Anne Boylan. Her birth month (Aug.) and birth year (1849) are corroborated in the 1900 Federal Census in New London, Connecticut. Also reported in the 1900 Fed. Census is her year of immigration: 1869, her inferred age at immigration being age 20. These data are reported in the Connecticut, New London, 1900 Federal Census record. In the 1910 Federal Census, Margaret reported her immigration year as 1870; however, she appears to have been settled in New London prior to that year, which lends more credence to her immigration year being 1869.

In 1870, Margaret is residing in New London, Connecticut, within the household of Josiah C. Waldo. She is listed as "Margaret Keating," age 21, and a "domestic servant." She is listed also with another "domestic servant" named Mary Keating, age 25, both are listed as being from Ireland and likely are sisters or cousins. The family they serve was originally from New Hampshire. A James Young, age 24, is also listed as a "gardner" residing within this same Waldo household.

Margaret married Terrence Cook in 1873 in New London, Connecticut. They continued to reside in New London and there had the following 7 children: Patrick G. b. Aug. 1874; John K. b. May 1876; Terance M. b. Oct. 1878; Lawrence M. b. Apr. 1881; Eugene A. b. July 1884; Mary C. b. June 1885; and James S. b. 1888.

The maiden name of Margaret prior to her marriage to Terrence is included in the Social Security Application and Claims Index of their son, Lawrence S., her maiden name reported as "Keating."

Margaret passed away a widow on June 24, 1933 at the age of 83. She is buried at Saint Mary's Cemetery in New London.
