Biography

Julious H Keen was the son of John Keen and Frances Murray, born on 31 Aug 1881 in Stark, Neosho County, Kansas. He grew up in Walnut, Crawford County, and Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas, and moved with his parents to Pueblo, Colorado, as a young man.[1][2][3]

In 1903, he boarded with his parents in Colorado Springs, and he enlisted as a band musician in the U.S. Army at Pueblo on 22 Aug 1904. He served in the 11th Cavalry Band until his discharge on 24 Mar 1906 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa.[4][5]

Julious married Viola Emma Tyson (1873–1940) on 28 Jan 1906 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. He re-enlisted as an Army musician on 13 Sep 1907 at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, this time serving in the 8th Cavalry Regiment until 12 Sep 1910. It appears that he and Viola separated, as he is listed as "Single" while serving as a sergeant in the 8th Cav Band on the U.S. Census in April 1910. The couple was officially divorced on 27 May 1918 in El Paso County, Colorado. [6][7][8]

Julious re-enlisted again on 26 Nov 1911 at Fort Riley, Kansas, and served through 16 Jan 1914, when he was discharged with a disability. He returned to Colorado where he filed for his pension on 30 Mar 1917.[9][10]

According to his World War I draft registration, Julious was paralyzed on his right side, and was already married to Hazel Keen by 12 Sep 1918. They lived in Pueblo until at least 1921; Julious was employed in a bank.[11][12][13]

Julious and Hazel adopted a little girl in 1921 and moved from Colorado to Amarillo, Texas. He died on 23 Nov 1928 in Dalhart, Dallam County, Texas, "when a vault door fell on him while he was helping raze the old First National Bank building." He was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Dalhart.[14][15][16][17][18]
