Biography

Rachel Keener was born in 1785, the daughter of Peter Keener (1750 - 1837) and Susannah (Lowe) Keener (1755 - 1840).

On March 17, 1801, in Knox county, Tennessee, Rachel married Hugh Botkin. [1]

Hugh was a farmer and a tanner by trade, and a prominent and respected citizen. Their family moved from Tennessee to Pike Township, Marion county, Indiana, in 1816. Rachel and Hugh were the parents of thirteen children, including:

  • Peter Botkin, born November 2, 1804, in Knox county, Tennesse, died November 24, 1876, married Elizabeth Adamson
  • Susannah Botkin, born 1807, in Tennessee, died May 15, 1863, in Marion county, Indiana, married Jonathan Hollingsworth, mother of ten children
  • Talitha Botkin (1809 - 1888) married James Overall Denton, widower of her sister, Esther
  • Nancy Botkin (1809 - 1886) married Abraham Adamson
  • Esther Botkin Denton (1811 - 1840) married James Overall Denton
  • Mary Lowe Botkin (1813 - 1895) married Miles Hunt
  • Dr. John Wesley Botkin (1819 - 1901) married Mary Peacock
  • Joseph Keener Botkin (1820 - 1891) married Harriet Ann Cropper
  • William Miller Botkin (1823 - 1906) married 1) Martha Ann Hiatt and 2) Docia Calloway Butler
  • Jonathan Botkin (1825 - 1850) name is listed on the headstone for his parents

Rachel died in 1857, in Randolph County, Indiana and is buried in the Huntsville cemtery, there. [2]
