Benijah Keener's Gravestone
Suffering the loss no parents should endure, Benji and Sarah lost two children at the same age. Rebecca died on 7 Jun 1873 when she was 16 of consumption (Tuberculosis) listed in the Death Register. [5] Their son, Benjiman, at age 16, succumbed to a fever and died in April 1875. [6]

Just a few short months later, Benijah joined his son when he died from fever at age 49 (although shown as 51 in the register), on 18 Jul 1875 in Frametown, West Virginia. They appear on the same Death Register. [7][8]

He was laid to rest in the family's eternal home: Keener Cemetery in Dessie, West Virginia where his parents, son and other relatives and ancestors are interred and named here: Keener Cemetery memorials. May they rest in peace. [9]

Benijah and Susan Keener are my 3x great-grandparents. I have had a long time interest in family history from stories my paternal grandmother and aunt told me as a child.

I was living in Fairbanks, Alaska (actually North Pole - it is a thing) and went to the local genealogy center of the library. Browsing through the booklets and files, I came across a stapled booklet: Marriages in Braxton County, West Virginia (previously Virginia) for 1830-1878. There I found the marriage record for Benji and Susan. Amazing! That was in the year 1985 B.C. (before computers). I was thrilled.

Through a fire, hurricanes, and floods, my plastic tote of paper genealogy records survive, including the copy of the record of this couple's marriage complete with date and officiant - David Frame, Esq.

Keep searching, you never know when you find that "diamond in the rough," that one spark that fuels a life-long adventure of going back to find where you are heading.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benijah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benijah:

Hi, Melvin

Fantastic to meet you! We are 6th cousins twice removed going back to Elizabeth Ehrehard Keener. Benji is 5 degrees from me and my 3x GG. Inez is my 4th cousin twice removed, also through Elizabeth. Fascinating to research, and thank you for your comment.

Take care ~ Sheryl
