Biography

Lucy was Cherokee.

Lucy Keeton was born March 14, 1825 in the Cherokee Nation (East) the daughter of Joseph Keeton, a white man, and Catherine Ward, a Cherokee woman. The 1830 U.S. Census shows the family living in Hall County, Georgia. [1] The family emigrated to Indian Territory as Old Settlers in the B.F. Curry detachment, [2] but they soon moved on to Rusk County, Texas. Lucy married Abel Dial there about 1846. [3] Lucy and the two oldest children appear on the 1851 Old Settler roll as a non-residents. [4] Lucy and Abel were the parents of Perlina, Malinda/Belinda, Isaac, Catherine, Martha, Rebecca. [5] Lucy, [6] and Nancy. [7]

Lucy and Abel returned to the Cherokee Nation in 1869. Lucy died in the Delaware District in 1878 and is buried at the Joe Ward Cemetery, Delaware, Oklahoma. [8]
