Apr. 13, 1830 Meriwether County Georgia, USA Death: Aug. 1, 1862, USA
Confederate Civil War Veteran. "D. D. Keith's father, Lt. Joseph Hardy Keith, died in the Confederate Army on either July 30 (gravestone), July 31 or Aug 1 (CSA records), but I found no evidence that he was killed. As late as July 18, his unit, the 55th GA Infantry, was in Camp Randolph near Calhoun. The unit began its combat operations later in August with the CSA invasion of Kentucky (the Perryville Campaign). His company commander, Henry Baker, also died, on August 5. I have speculated that a number of men in the regiment contracted illnesses in camp that proved fatal. Joseph Hardy Keith's widow (Margaret W. Peavy Keith b. 1831, m. 12/30/1852) filed a claim for his back pay with the Confederate government, which was granted in July 1863. The return correspondence confirms his service dates, and simply states that "he died". It only affects the semantics of the matter; he was nonetheless a martyr to the Confederate cause. Signed, Steve Keith"
